So far as I am aware no letters whatsoever have been

written to Hamburg by any of our Branches (with the exception

of Tokohama) since the outbreak of war, because there are the 361

come here,

strictest instructions that copies of every letter or memo must

I am aware that the Manager of the Tokohama,

Branch attempted to send some letters to Hamburg but I do not

know whether they got there. He did it unknown to me and without

my authority.

I have been told by a young man who managed to escape

from Hamburg, and who brought messages to the parents of one of

our employees there, that our Branch in Hamburg being a Branch

of a British Firm was closed down by the German Authorities

iamediately at the outbreak of War.

J

Our Branches have not received a single line from

Hamburg since the outbreak of War, and our Yokohama Manager is

writing continuously (also in a mail dated Yokohama January 14th,

and received today) that contrary to all other firms in Japan he

has not received a single line since the last letter dated

Hamburg July 24th 1914.

I only mention these facts in corroboration of the

information I have received that the Branch in Hamburg has ceased

ite activities on the outbreak of Ter, and is evidently being

treated there as a Hostile Firm,

I further wish to mention that our Hamburg Branch has done direct business with English Manufacturers in goods which we did not deal in from this side, and that these manufacturers have got short notices from our Hamburg Branch asking them to cancel all ordera. I take it that the Authorities there must have insisted on all British business being cancelled.
